Monday Mindset: Habits, Rituals and Rhythms

“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

Jim Ryun

As we’re finishing 2017 most of us are focusing on 2018 and what we want to accomplish.  These are our goals.  We all have them and they give hope and motivation. However, they’ll only motivate us for so long.  If we don’t make some progress on our goals right way, they’ll soon demotivate and depress us as we once again “fail”.

If you haven’t read the last two Monday Mindsets: Stop thinking and start doing and Increase your chances of success by 85% , I would encourage you to do it.  You wouldn’t be reading this blog if you weren’t thinking about creating the life you’ve always wanted.  Reading alone won’t do it, that’s why I want to give you some practical things you can do to WIN in work and life in 2018.

I don’t’ know how many times I’ve heard my wife say, “You eat whatever’s in front of you without even thinking about it” over the years and she’s right. This is a habit I’ve formed over the years and I do it without even thinking about it.  I didn’t plan for it to be a habit, it just happened as I did it over and over again.

All of us have good and bad habits. When we do something over and over again “boom” it’s a habit. You add enough bad habits into your day and you trade the life you want for the one you have. It’s interesting, most of us know what we need to do, but too often we don’t do it.  Why? Because we’ve developed habits that get in the way of what we really want.  I know I have.

At the end of every year I choose words for the next one that will keep me focused.  For 2018 my words are Habits, Rituals and Rhythms.  I believe these are what I need to change, develop, incorporate and strengthen next year to WIN.

It takes a BIG goal to break bad habits and create the right ones. Or maybe the pain of remaining the same needs to become greater than the pain of changing.  That’s why I asked you to answer that questions 2 weeks ago:  One year from now, what would you like to say, “I did it” to?  ______________________.

What’s that life changing goal?  I’m not suggesting you find it, I’m telling you. You HAVE to discover this.  That one thing; your reason, your goal.  Whatever it is, I know it will take new habits to achieve it.

Habit: a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.

You have to be intentional to create the habits you need to achieve what you want. As you look at your goal(s), what are the habits that are holding you back:

Habits that are holding you back?

  • Over eating (Too big a portion, having seconds and thirds)
  • Snacking at night (You’re not even hungry, it’s just a habit)
  • Eating whatever’s in front of you (like me)
  • Constantly Checking Email (The moment you wake up, get to work, on the way home, when you get home. It’s takes our attention away from what’s important)
  • Constantly Looking at your phone
  • Spending hours on social media
  • Turning the TV on when you wake up, get home or go to bed
  • Being negative and making negative comments
  • Complaining
  • Lying
  • Making Excuses
  • Blaming other people and things
  • Smoking
  • Drinking too much alcohol
  • Gossiping
  • Procrastination
  • Focusing on problems
  • Other(s):

What are the NEW habits that will move your forward?

  • Regular Exercise (How many days a week and how long per day?)
  • 8 Glasses of water a day (minimum)
  • Daily Reading
  • Morning Prayer/Meditation
  • Getting up earlier
  • Check before saying “yes” (for those that over commit, stop saying “yes” right away and start saying, “I need to check” then check your work and your personal calendars)
  • Always put stuff on your calendar (Every time)
  • Do it now (don’t put stuff off)
  • Daily Affirmations
  • Giving Compliments
  • Daily acts of kindness
  • Generosity
  • Saying “Thank you” and “Please”
  • Others:

Our habits will help us create the routines we need to take our life and business where we want it to go.  THIS IS YOUR YEAR.  Believe it and create the habits to achieve it!

Next week we’ll look how rituals can help us WIN in work and life.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, habits and ideas.  Please put them in the comment below.
